Happy Memorial Day!

Being a typical American (a sucker for any holiday), I wanted to wish all my fellow Americans/expats a very Happy Memorial Day. This holiday is not observed here in France, and I am not sure of it's equivalent... someone help me out, please. I never really "celebrated" this holiday back home other than having the day of from work and being happy about it... But let's pause for a moment of silence to honour all the courageous men and women all over who have given up their own lives for a cause they believed in. That being said, I am TOTALLY anti-war and it's just sad that human beings cannot settle their differences peacefully/live in peace without causing pain, death and suffering to others...

I have no idea what the equivalent is, V Day, that one that just passed, May 8th I think?

I too am totally anti-war but it is strange being here in France. You can be anti-war and show respect for people who have served in the military. In the US there is always that "either you're with us or against us" attitude.

Anyway, I forgot it was Memorial Day, in fact I always mix up Memorial Day and Labor Day. I was a teacher so those were 2 important holidays for me because the majority of my vacation fell between them. I"m working 4 hours today and then have a dinner party to prepare for, not much time for anythings else.

There's no equivalent in France.

The only two war related holidays we have in France are Nov. 11th (WW1 victory) and May 8th (WW2 victory)...

In France war is not idealized like in, let's say, the US, so veterans are not "heroes", they're just people like you and me that were born at the wrong time and the wrong place and supporting our troops means not sending them in harm's way for no reason...

Maybe that's because our militaro-industrial complex is not a big part of our economy, so there's not need to brainwash people into believing being called a hero is worth losing a limb or your life.

(whoops, I'm being controversial again... sorry... If you don't want any potential flame on your blog, just edit my comment...)

Hi Leesa,
Yes, I know what you mean about being anti-war. I was really not sure to post or not with this one.

I do have 2 Vets in my family; Dad and Grandad who were both career Navy.
They were just two regular me,; not heroes.
Leesa, do you know Fort Rosecrans cemetery at Point Loma?? That's where GDad is buried.
Thinking of them both.

Francetales- Merci pour le mail et le commentaire... Bienvenue chez mon blog! I hope we will be able to visit Toulouse this summer and we will DEFINITELY look you guys up! I always love to meet new people, too! I know what you mean about the differences in mentalities re:War... It's true that in America... if you support the troops- then you are in favour of the war...and if you want to bring 'em back home- you're against the war.. No one wins a war... I can't even get started because sooo many millions of people have been affected besides the Americans that it hurts my heart to even think about it...
Daivd- You're comments are ALWAYS welcome here... no matter how controversial.. Only thing I don't stand for is racism or any other form of -isms against humanity... sexism... and feminism.. OOPS! Did I say that?? On my own blog?? I retract... NOT! Sorry, I couldn't resist.. I'll pay later! Anyhow.. you're comment wasn't controversial.. You can talk politics with me and I won't get offended.. I live in France!! I am farrrrrrrrrrr away from Bush and his friends! ; )

Barbara- I sincerely honor any person who has served in the military.. I honor and respect them. It's the leaders/gov't of our countries that lead us into battle.. and brave and courageous women and men with a conviction to protect and fight for their fellow countrymen.. I could NEVER do that.. I cried when I watched the video at Pearl Harbour about the History or the Arizona... I broke down and sobbed when I learned about that famous date in History just as my heart breaks for all the evil in the world that is going on around us everywhere... I pray for peace and for people to one day live in harmony and treat one another with respect and kindness.. This seems so impossible to me sometimes because I feel that we are MORE torn apart as a humanity than ever before... All the evils are just mounting.. ready to explode.. I try NOT to think about it too much because it makes me very sad and depressed!
