The FREE HUGS CAMPAIGN.. in Montparnasse

I spotted these two young lads on the corner of Montparnasse Blvd. yesterday and stopped for a free hug... "un calin gratuit". I don't think "hugs" is something understood here.. at least among strangers. But I have logged onto YOUTUBE and watched several videos in different countries and I think that outside of America.. people are really AFRAID to hug total and complete strangers... For Americans, hugs are a normal and everyday greeting... just like "La Bise" in France.. I think hugs should catch on here, too... Wish I got the names of the two young men... they were cute and courageous for their attempt to break down social barriers... HATS OFF to you two.. Ifyou read this.. please send me a comment or email... Thanks!!

Hi Fiona...
I don't know where it started.. actually.. but I remember watching something about the actual campaign on Youtube.. about how it started.. I meant that Americans are more liberal with their hugs than the other cultures I have watched on the FREE HUG videos... I don't remember seeing from OZ, so I don't know if they are big huggers there like the Americans are!

Hiya. Check out this link below - apparently the guy claims to have started the whole free hugs thing in Sydney (the video is on the link) - who knows if it's true.

But yeah, it's such a cool thing.

As soon as I read the title of this entry, I immediately thought to myself, "good luck with that one!"

I can't imagine the French being a "hugging people" and in all honesty, it would seem strange to me...in general, they don't strike me as a "warm" people. How odd to imagine them hugging about and what have you.

Anais,

I DO think the French are very tendre people, but it is usually once you know someone as a friend.. To me, "la bise" is more like a handshake... and not really the same as a hug... but for complete strangers to give hugs to one another.... that is not really in the culture... I tend to think that people who have already "heard" about this FREE HUG CAMPAIGN are more likely to go up to the people and give a hug.. Also, maybe the people don't know what "Free Hug" means and it should be Calins Gratuits" instead.. Go look up Calins Gratuits on YouTube.. http://www.youtube.com and you will see a different side of this.. More people are hugging in these videos... Je suis d'accord avec toi... les Francais sont tres sympas et tendres!! Bizz, Leesa
